Watchmaking

Watchmaking brings together science, technology, art, industry, the trade in time-measuring instruments1.

There are three categories of watchmaking:

ancient watchmaking describing different types of instruments, so-called horologia that can indicate the old hours, such as sundials, hydraulic clocks, hourgla
ss; traditional watchmaking originally entirely mechanical, invention of the late 13th century called simply watchmaking; it concerns mechanical clocks, watches and cloc
ks; today’s watchmaking where mechanical watchmaking mechanisms are replaced by non-mechanical functions: electronic systems, computers, etc.
Instruments may be at the crossroads of different categories such as electric clocks with mechanical components and electric motors, for example.
