A watchmaking mechanism is the organ or fundamental element of a watchmaking instrument (clock, clock, watch, etc.). It performs the main function of “giving the time.”
This mechanism is the result of a mechanical assembly of parts, some of which may have movement in relation to others. Designated as a primary mechanism, it then includes other more basic mechanisms, lower levels, such as the motor element, the cog, the exhaust, etc.
It is the progress of the various watchmaking mechanisms that have enabled the evolution of watchmaking science. This practice has been listed in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage in France since 2018
